Overview

INTRODUCTION

The International Session for Educators of Higher Institutes of Physical Education aims το:

  • Familiarize participants with the Olympic Movement, its history, ideals and values by providing an international forum for discussion and exchange of ideas and practices.
  • Explore current issues related to physical education, sports, Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement.
  • Motivate and encourage the participants to use their experiences and knowledge gained from the Session productively in their universities by introducing their students to the Olympic Ideals and motivate them to conduct research in Olympic issues.

July 8 – Saturday

08.30 hrs Departure by coach for Ancient Olympia.

Arrival in Ancient Olympia at 13.30 hrs approximately.

Accommodation at the International Olympic Academy, Ancient Olympia Campus


14.00   hrs Lunch.


17.30   hrs Opening Ceremony  (Otto Szymiczek Conference hall).

- Olympic anthem.

- Presentation of the lecturers and the participants.

- Welcome Address by the President of the International Olympic Academy, Μr Isidoros KOUVELOS,  Member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Member of the IOC Commission for Olympic Education, 1st Vice-President of the Hellenic Equestrian Federation, and Board member of the International Olympic Truce Foundation.

18.00   hrs Lecture by Prof. Mag. Dr. Otmar WEISS (AUT), Department of Sport Science, University of Vienna, on the subject: “How can university sport contribute to make the Olympic Movement more relevant to the youth.


18.30   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.

19.00   hrs Lecture by Prof. Nikolaos DIGELIDIS (GRE), Department of PE & Sport Science, University of Thessaly, on the subject:

“Sport as a tool for tailored and inclusive educational programmes”.


19.30   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.


20.00  hrs Laying of wreaths at the stele of Pierre de COUBERTIN, renovator of the Olympic Games, and at the commemorative monument of John KETSEAS and Carl DIEM, pioneers of the International Olympic Academy.

July 9 – Sunday


08.30   hrs Guided tour to the archaeological site and the museum of Ancient Olympia.

16.30   hrs         Lecture by Assoc. Prof. Colleen ENGLISH (USA), Program Chair, Kinesiology, Penn State, on the subject:

“The role of the Sport Movement in the development of modern societies”.


17.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.

17.30   hrs Lecture by Prof. Dr. Stephan WASSONG (GER), German Sport University Cologne, Head of Institute of Sport History, Director of the Olympic Studies Centre, on the subject: “Olympism and its role in students’life – a historical and contemporary perspective.”


18.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.


18.30   hrs Lecture by Prof. Marion KEIM (RSA), UNESCO Chair for Sport, Development, Peace, and Olympic Education, Director Interdisciplinary Centre for Sport Science and Development, University of the Western Cape, on the subject: “A values-based approach to Mentorship and Olympism”.


19.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.

July 10 – Monday


08.30   hrs Lecture by Prof. Jim PARRY (GBR), Faculty of Physical Education and Sport, Charles University, Prague, on the subject:

“Olympic E-Sports Week, virtual sports and real sports”. 


09.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer. 

 

09.30   hrs Lecture by Dr Yoav DUBINSKY (ISR), Instructor of Sports Business, Lundquist College of Business, University of Oregon, on the subject:

“Tokyo 2020 and the New Era of the Olympic Movement”.


10.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.

10.30   hrs Lecture by Dr Dionyssis GANGAS (GRE), IOA Development Projects Consultant, Member of the IOC Commission for Culture and Olympic Heritage, on the subject: “The practice of sport as a human right”.


11.00   hrs Discussion with the lecturer.


11.30   hrs Short presentations by the participants (1).


12.30   hrs Discussion in Working Groups (2).


16.00   hrs Discussion in Working Groups (3). 


Final elaboration of the conclusions from the Working Groups and submission of the final text to the IOA 

Secretariat by 20.30 hrs at the latest.


July 11 – Tuesday


08.30   hrs Short presentations by the participants (2).


09.30 hrs Presentation of the conclusions of the Working Groups.

Closing Ceremony of the works of the 14th International Session for Educators of Higher Institutes of Physical Education.

- Presentation of participation diplomas.

- Address on behalf of the participants.

- Address on behalf of the lecturers.

-Address and closing of the works of the Session by the President of the International Olympic Academy, Mr Isidoros KOUVELOS.

- Olympic anthem.


July 12 Wednesday

08.30   hrs Departure for Athens.


Arrival in Athens at approximately 13.30 hrs. Accommodation at the Ilissos hotel.
