International Seminar on Olympic Studies for Postgraduate Students PDF Print E-mail

postSoon entering its 19th year, the Post-Graduate Seminar is a forum for studies on the "three pillars" – the Olympic Movement, the Olympic Games and Olympism. These studies involve both Ancient and contemporary Olympic issues. The main topic of the Seminar is “The Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement: Past, Present and Future - An Analysis from the Historical, Philosophical and Social Perspectives” while its special topic differs each year.

The Post-Graduate Seminar has proved a unique catalyst in the domain of Olympic studies. Professors from all over the world, specialised in Olympic Movement issues, contribute to the works of the Seminar. The Seminar is divided into four periods or cycles:

     a) The Ancient Olympic Games and their philosophy.
     b) The modern Olympic Movement, the revival of the Olympic Games and the Olympic Education.
     c) The socio-political and economic aspects of the modern Olympic Games (media and communication, management, organisation and marketing).
     d) The ethical and philosophical issues as well as the athletes’ rights in the modern Olympic Movement.

The Seminar’s participants are selected according to their qualifications, the topic of their paper, the country, as well as the cultural background they come from. The total number of participants does not exceed the thirty five (35) students. Participants are up to 40 years of age. Priority is given to the participants that are recommended by the NOCs and the NOAs. English is the exclusive language of the Seminar. The majority of the Seminar participants are master’s degree holders, PhD candidates or PhD holders. The participants state that they acquire more knowledge for the Olympic Movement and Olympism and they better understand the social and educational role of the Olympic Movement.
