Joint International Session for Educationists and Staff of Higher Institutes of Physical Education

The main topic of this bi-annual Session is Olympism and at each Session, a special subtopic is discussed. This Session aims to provide a forum for senior members of staff of higher educational institutes and educationists, to explore Olympic issues and practices.

The educational aspects of Olympism and the Olympic Movement are examined as is the humanistic and cultural significance of sport and its contribution to modern society.

Practical and culturally relevant teaching methods are sought and discussed in order to promote healthy sport practices and Olympic Ideals, among the youth of the world.

Participation

  • Higher Institutes of Physical Education may register one (1) representative
  • National Olympic Committees may register two (2) educationists
  • National Olympic Academies may register one (1) educationist

The working languages of the Session are English, French and Greek

Short Papers or Presentations

Participants are invited to send to the IOA, prior to the Session, short papers, posters and presentations on themes related to the special topic of the Session. Papers should be submitted in any of the three official IOA languages. The Ephoria of the IOA will select the reports to be presented during the Session.

Special Topics of the Joint International Session for Educationists and Staff of Higher Institutes of Physical Education

Up until the year 1990, separate Sessions were held for Educationists and for Directors and Heads of Higher Institutes of Physical Education. As from 1993, the Sessions have been held jointly.

International Sessions for Educationists 1973-1990

  • The contribution of Education to the Olympic Movement.
  • Olympism and Education.
  • Methods of teaching the Olympic Idea in schools.
  • The contribution of Olympic Education to General Education.
  • The role of Olympic Education in the education of youth.
  • Olympism in schools.

International Sessions for Directors and Heads of Higher Institutes of Physical Education 1986-1990

  • Olympism in the curriculum of the Higher Institutes of Physical Education.
  • Olympism as an independent subject in the curricula of the Higher Institutes of Physical Education.
    a) Introduction of Olympism as a main subject in the curricula of the Institutes.
    b)Educational Methodology of Olympism as a main subject in the curricula of the Institutes

Joint International Sessions for Educationists and Heads of Higher Institutes of Physical Education 1993- to date

  • Olympism, fair play and youth training in schools and universities.
  • The pedagogy of sport: Implications of the IOC Centennial Congress-The Congress of Unity.
  • Ethics in sport and the Olympic Games.
