Olympic EducationThis field examines Olympism as a pedagogical idea. Students explore the cultural conditions that, as part of a greater educational system, gave rise to the Olympic Spirit in Ancient Greece, from 776BC to 394AD. Olympism and its principles which aim for the harmonious development of Man, self-improvement, fair play, mutual respect and understanding and peace, are studied as educational models to be applied in other areas of life. The global character of Olympism and the ways in which it is perceived and enhanced by different cultures is explored, as is the need for Olympic Education programmes which take into account the above conditions. The history and development of Olympic Education and the IOA, as an Education Centre, are examined, as are materials, resources and ideas for Olympic Education programmes, and the role of the IOA and the NOAs in creating educational programmes to spread the principles of Olympism and the Olympic Movement.
