The Revival of the Olympic Games

Explores the conditions which allowed for the revival of the Olympic Games: the Rennaisance, the period of Enlightenment, the philhellenic movement and the political, economic, social and technological conditions prevalent in the late 19th century.

The efforts, ideas and contributions of de Coubertin, Vikelas, Zappas and their contemporaries are analysed.

Students also study the preparations and organisation of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens and the strong tedencies created.
