Program Description
Mastering Olympic Champions of Change Competencies & Literacy
Olympism for Humanity (O4H) was founded by Dr Alexis Lyras in 2011 at the birthplace of Olympism and the Olympic idea, Ancient Olympia, Greece – and was established as an Olympism in Action – Sport for Development Academic Innovation global venture at the Conflict Resolution Program, Department of Government, at Georgetown University with support from the Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) , the International Olympic Academy, Olympism for Humanity global academic partners– and more recently with support from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
The initial vision of this global initiative was to provide capacity building and academic support mechanism to scholars, academic institutions, policymakers and practitioners who wish to utilize the power of sport and the Olympic idea to promote positive social change, Conflict Resolution and Sustainable Development programs in their respective communities. Since then, our founder, Dr. Alexis Lyras, pioneered the first Olympism in Action- SFD Professional Development Program at the birth place of the Olympic idea and established an Applied Olympic Studies Academic Innovation Center called Olympism For Humanity Alliance, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) IRS awarded Charitable Academic Institution (2014) with solid foundations and academic soundness grounded on the Olympism for Humanity(O4H) and Sport for Development (SFDT) Theories (Lyras, 2005,2007, 2020, 2021). These theories- and framework has served as a blueprint for Lyras’ MA, Ph.D. work at the University of Connecticut (2002-2007),and were expanded through his Post-Doctoral work at the Georgetown University (2012-2014), with competitive scholarships, funding and grants awarded by the International Olympic Committee‘s Olympic Solidarity, United Nations‘ Agencies, the Research and Innovation Foundation, Goldman Sachs Gives, Georgetown University and Generations for Peace Senior & Post Doctoral Fellowship.
The central function of O4H and SFDT theories aims to provide a Universal Design & Global Human Development platform across disciplines and contexts for assessing and enriching, personal and institutional capacity of Olympism in Action and Sport for Development policy and community-based academic teaching and programming-(Lyras, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2020, 2021, 2023) a robust scientific blueprint for optimizing the use of Sport and Olympism as an enabler of Sustainable Development (UN 2003, 2005, 2008, 2019, 2024). These foundations serve as the lighthouse and the compass of all our Academic innovation ventures; O4H Academy and our Summer programs in Ancient Olympia, the first, and longest running Olympism in Action – Sport for Development Champions of Change Certificate Academic program in Sport- and Olympic Studies History.
